Though he once supported same sex marriage as a candidate for governor of
Massachusetts, during his presidential campaign Mitt Romney signed a NOM pledge
committing him promising to support a federal constitutional amendment
defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman. The pledge also
included a promise to vigorously defend the Defense of Marriage Act,
nominate Supreme Court and federal judges who opposed same sex marriage.
The pledge also included a promise to establish a presidential commission on
"religious liberty" that would investigate harassment or threats against
anyone taking positions against same-sex marriage. This became important to NOM
after gay Americans and supporters began investigating campaign contributions to
California Proposition 8 and making them public, with the resulting condemnation
and social isolation of those who contributed heavily. To the antigay religious
right, gay Americans fighting back against harassment is itself harassment,
since we deserve it.
