Hollywood industry insiders were stunned by an interview with the one time head of the powerful Artists Management Group, Michael Ovitz, published in the August 2002 Vanity Fair. In the interview, Ovitz blames his career downfall on a "gay mafia" which he said ruined his business and reputation.
The piece, provides the most detailed account yet of the financial mismanagement that doomed Ovitz's ambitious plans for AMG. Conducted during AMG's decline, Ovitz furiously denounced his perceived enemies for his business failures. But it was his statements about a "gay mafia" which left even battle-hardened Hollywood players speechless. Although several of the "members" of the "gay Mafia" aren't gay, Ovitz claimed they include Walt Disney Chairman Michael Eisner and Ron Meyer, Ovitz's onetime business partner. Others in the cabal, according to Ovitz, are record Mogul David Geffen, former Ovitz protégés Bryan Lourd, Kevin Huvane and Richard Lovett, as well as talent manager Bernie Brillstein.
Of Ovitz statements, David Geffen said, "On a scale of 1 to 10 crazy, it's 11." USA Chairman Barry Diller said, "You're not serious. Wow! He said that on the record? Wow...wow, wow..." GLADD entertainment media director Scott Seomin said, "It really reeks of the homophobia we saw in the '70s and '80s when a lot of gay execs were closeted."
