A bill providing federal assistance to same sex survivors of victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks on America, including gay New York chaplain Mychal Judge and nine other public safety officers who died during the terrorist attacks, was killed by house majority leader Dick Armey, immediately after it had cleared a house committee. The Senate had previously passed the proposal unanimously.
Sources told a new york newspaper that the bill was killed because some lawmakers did not want to extend recognition to same-sex domestic partners.
George Burke, of the International Association of Firefighters called Armey's decision to kill the measure "outrageous."
Empire State Pride Agenda, a New York lesbian and gay rights organization, has estimated that as many as two dozen gay men and lesbians were killed in the September 11 terrorist attacks.
