Musical Theatre Under Fire for Artistic Director’s Prop 8 Support
California Musical Theatre is Sacramento’s "oldest professional performing arts organization and California’s largest nonprofit musical theater company" according to the Sacramento Bee and its artistic director Scott Eckern, who has been with the theatre for 25 years, has placed it in turmoil following revelations that he donated $1,000 to the campaign to pass Prop 8.
Hairspray director Marc Shaiman is leading the charge to boycott the theatre. Shaiman reportedly told Eckern: "The idea that your donation came from a salary that for a short amount of time was drawn from profits from a show I wrote upsets me terribly and I would never allow anything I write to play there and will encourage my colleagues to consider doing the same."

Well, theres goes yet another stereotype down the drain! Whats next? Interior decorators and hair dressers will turn out to be bigots too?
I thought that theater was an institution that would ALWAYS be rife with indoctrinating and recruiting Ho Mo Sex Uals?
I wonder how many OTHER community civic theaters will follow suit? Here in Topeka, the Topeka Civic theater has been one the THE most "Stereotypical" theaters: Completely rife with Queers of every stripe, and oddly and ironically (For Topeka that is) is VERY WELL supported (financially) by the general public and wealthy white liberals (And some conservatives).
But here is the rub for ME when my more "libertarian" side comes out: Eckern has every right to support whatever causes and candidates he wishes. And he has every right to donate his own cash (As long as it is actually HIS, regardless of where it came from). No one should EVER be punished for following and supporting their political agendas, or religious ones. (I’ve made myself persona non gratta with a few Gay groups and people around here for going AGAINST stupid ordinance proposals that aimed to keep Fred from picketing: Basically becoming "Pro Fred" in some idiots blind eyes)
The flip-side is that Shaiman and anyone else ALSO have the right and reason to react to that in whatever way they feel is appropriate. Boycotting included. (Gawd knows the bigots have been boycotting US in every way shape and form they can think of, for centuries)
Ahmanson is reported to have a lot of real-estate holdings. (And I suspect that those are used mostly by "Pro-Fambly" religious groups to store their kook-pews in) And doesn’t the Mormon church ALSO own businesses? (Aside from the patents they own on several weapons, like Ingram semi-auto rifles …yup, the military industrial complex has been good to them)
