In the weeks leading up to a vote in the Maryland General Assembly to give same sex couples the right to marry, Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley came out in support. Meanwhile the usual suspects were beginning their hate campaign against same sex marriage in Maryland, having had success defeating it in other, mostly red states, and in particular, California via Proposition 8.

The Maryland General Assembly would go on to pass a bill allowing for same sex marriage in March 2012. NOM announced a petition drive against the law immediately, and later submitted twice the number of signatures to get it on the ballot. But things would not go according to plan. In the general election November 2012, the voters approved same sex marriage. Maryland that year, along with Washington state, became the first states to approve same sex marriage by popular vote, breaking NOM's winning streak, and setting the stage for a reverse course in public opinion. Hating gays was no longer a sure thing at the ballot box.
