The list is unfocused. Even if you agree Marlboro Man is a recognizable figure all over the world, he’s a recent one. The generic “American Cowboy” would rank above him in terms of how many poeple he’s influenced. Santa Claus, Robin Hood and Uncle Sam, have done more to influence people for a longer time. Mickey Mouse is a recognizable figure all around the world I’m sure, but did he ever Influence anyone beyond a few moments of happy childhood entertainment?
I’d have called it a list of 101 most recognizable people who never lived. In that case, yeah, Marlboro Man is probably number one…nowadays. I hear the American tobacco company that created him has been using him all over the world to sell their cigarettes, and they say in the ad business that he’s still a powerful image. People all over the world probably recognize him. Maybe even more then Santa. Santa’s pretty much an American cultural thing. American corporate advertizing is universal nowadays. I’m surprised Ronald McDonald isn’t on that list.
Good thing Marlboro Man isn’t my type. Seriously. I pride myself on my indifference to advertising, but if I’m honest I know that key to my wallet is in there…they’re just not getting at it. A lot of advertising is based on sex appeal and it goes right over my head because it’s either aimed at heterosexual males, or the guys in them are hunks and hunks don’t do it for me.

That is a truly weird list. Was it meant as a joke? (I certainly hope so.) What do you make of the Marlboro Man ranking #1?
