Ha ha! I’m really starting to like these two. Good story, hope to see more of them.

  4. Bill S Says:

While it’s surprising the “Brokeback Mountain” didn’t win (because it had the most nominations going in), and, for me, dissappointing (because I was rooting for it), I don’t think the fact that it didn’t is necessarily some anti-gay snub. After all, with 8 nominations and 3 wins,it probably DID get a lot of votes for Best Picture. (It had a one in five chance of winning; since vote totals aren’t disclosed, it’s hard to know how close it was.)
There are more practical reason why “Crash” probably won:
“Brokeback Mountain” didn’t garner a nomination for film editing. Editers aren’t likely to cast a vote for a movie that was overlooked in that category-the last “Best Picture” winner without a nom for editing was “Ordinary People” 25 years ago.
The Screen Actors Guild awarded “Crash” its prize for Best Ensemble cast, an indication that the acting branch of the Academy favored that film. (In fact, of the cast, only Jake Gyllenhaal has won ANY acting award, the BAFTA, a British equivalent to the Oscar.)
“Crash” was set in contemporary Los Angeles, “Brokeback Mountain” was set in rural Wyoming and Texas in the 1960’s. Where do most of the people voting for this award live…?
I’d also like to add that, though it wasn’t my first choice, I didn’t think “Crash” was a bad movie. It’s also one of the few Best Picture winners that feature black actors in key roles-by my count, there have only been a total of about 10 in 78 years. And I had to stretch the definition of a “key role” to include Sam (Dooley Wilson) in “Casablanca” in order to get that number.
