{"id":2256,"date":"2008-11-13T13:54:52","date_gmt":"2008-11-13T18:54:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brucegarrett.com\/brucelog\/?p=2256"},"modified":"2008-11-13T16:29:37","modified_gmt":"2008-11-13T21:29:37","slug":"despised-minority-in-the-land-of-the-free","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brucegarrett.com\/brucelog\/2256","title":{"rendered":"Despised Minority In The Land Of The Free"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you think it&#8217;s only marriage they want to take from us, you are sadly mistaken.&nbsp; Note this exchange in the chamber of the U.S. Supreme Court, buried within a legal debate about monuments in public parks&#8230;\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h4><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/11\/13\/washington\/13sect.html?_r=1&amp;oref=slogin\">Justices Grapple With Question of Church Monument as Free Speech Issue <\/a><\/h4>\n<p>WASHINGTON &mdash; The hypothetical questions were flying at the Supreme Court on Wednesday, and that was not a good sign for Summum, a small church that wants to place a monument to the Seven Aphorisms of its faith near a Ten Commandments monument in a public park in Pleasant Grove City, Utah.<\/p>\n<p>The questioning suggested that the justices were finding it hard to identify a principle that would compel the city to accept the Summum monument without creating havoc in public parks around the nation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The justices start tossing out various examples of what can and cannot be excluded&#8230;and then this comes up&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Would it be all right, Justice <a title=\"More articles about John Paul Stevens.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/s\/john_paul_stevens\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\">John Paul Stevens<\/a> asked, for the government to exclude the names of gay  soldiers from the Vietnam memorial?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This was rhetorical on Stevens&#8217; part.&nbsp; Stevens is one of the sane justices on the bench.&nbsp; But its prime fascist&nbsp; jumped on it gleefully&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Mr. Joseffer had to be pressed to answer the question about excluding the names of gay soldiers.
