Veteran comes out as gay in his obituary: ‘Now that my secret is known, I’ll forever rest in peace’<\/h2>\n

Col. Edward Thomas Ryan of Rennselaer, New York, wrote that his fear of being ostracized by friends and family kept him from coming out.<\/p>\n

The obituary, published by the Albany Times Union on June 8, 2024, ended with a message written by Ryan himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cI must tell you one more thing. I was Gay all my life: thru grade school, thru High School, thru College, thru Life,\u201d he revealed, adding that he found love in a relationship with a man from North Greenbush, New York.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was the love of my life,\u201d Ryan wrote. \u201cWe had 25 great years together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ryan went on to say that his love died in 1994 \u201cfrom a medical procedure gone wrong\u201d and that he will be buried next to him.<\/p>\n

Ryan concluded by explaining why he did not come out in his lifetime.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry for not having the courage to come out as Gay,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI was afraid of being ostracized: by Family, Friends, and Co-Workers. Seeing how people like me were treated, I just could not do it. Now that my secret is known, I\u2019ll forever Rest in Peace.\u201d<\/p>\n
