Not The First Author Who Ended Up Hating The Creation Everyone Loves

Among my Facebook things today…

Poor guy. Everyone loves Sherlock and he came to dislike the character so much he tried to kill him off, and the public wouldn’t stand for it so he kept writing his stories. At least they made him money.

“He was a prolific writer who produced over 200 stories and articles, four volumes of poetry, and a number of works for the stage. He was knighted by King Edward VII in the 1902 Coronation Honours.” -Wikipedia

I love the Sherlock Holmes stories, they appeal to my inner logic geek. And he always played fair with the reader. The pinnacle I think was the story Silver Blaze, which IMO is a spectacular display of logic.

Okay…a Dazzling display of logic. And yet all the pieces are there for the reader to discover along with Holmes.  If you haven’t read it yet I can’t recommend it enough, and also, especially, the Jeremy Brett BBC version…

I’m so sorry Sir Arthur…you wrote so many other wonderful works, and you really didn’t like Holmes, but there’s a reason he has a life in the ages to come. You gave us all something wonderful. Thank you.
