On April 11, Kentucky governor Ernie Fletcher removed protections against job
discrimination from gay and lesbian state employees. To add insult to injury,
he did it on the same day he declared "Diversity Day".
Some business leaders voiced concerns that an anti-gay environment
could drive away businesses interested in coming to the state. Probably their
being taxed to support discrimination won't help matters either. The state
assembly recently gave 11 million dollars to The University of the
Cumberlands, an ostensibly private Baptist institution that recently expelled
gay student Jason Johnson. But Fletcher seems less concerned with cultivating
new businesses, then cultivating the money and votes of the powerful religious
right. Today, despite many calls to veto the money, Fletcher signed the money
over. Discrimination may not be good for business in Kentucky, or elsewhere,
but with their people in office it makes millions for the religious right.
