News Item: Baylor University Targets Gay Student Group Chalkings

Members of the unofficial Baylor gay student group said their campus chalkings were targeted by school officials. The group, called "Baylor Freedom" inscribed chalk messages advertising its web site. When they were brought to the attention of campus officials, they were immediately washed off. Other student group chalkings over the same period, were untouched.

Baylor University was chartered in 1845 by the Republic of Texas and is affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas. It advertises itself as the largest Baptist university in the world. Head of Student Activities, Dub Oliver, later said that as Baylor Freedom was a gay student group, and Baylor University condemns homosexuality, its chalkings would be unlikely to gain official approval.
